SECURITY

Organisations of all sizes are moving more of their workloads into public or hybrid Clouds with a view to enhancing their ability to more rapidly deploy new applications and services which must be reliable, high performing, scalable and secure.

The uncomfortable reality, however, is that your tradition Wide Area Network (WAN) is at risk of compromising your ability to deliver on these goals. In particular, the reliance on a single network carrier and only one WAN connection at each location is no longer sustainable.

The WAN is the foundation stone of any transformation journey

A RECENT IDG ENTERPRISE POLL ON WAN MANAGEMENT LISTED THE 5 MOST SIGNIFICANT ISSUES FOR NETWORK MANAGERS AS:

Increased complexity / increased number of network appliances to maintain; Time-consuming processes for moves, adds and changes; Decreased responsiveness as the network grows; Difficulty and expense of keeping up with auditing for regulatory compliance, and Cumbersome security framework around the WAN

SD-WAN overcomes ALL of these challenges

As an overlay (or software) network that runs over the top of any available wired or wireless access technology, SD-WAN benefits for your organisation can be grouped into 4 key areas:

What is SD-WAN?

Dramatically improve performance without requiring A upgrade of existing infrastructure

SD-WAN is a specific application of software defined networking applied to WAN connections. It is a virtual or overlay network running on top of existing internet and VPN connections.

It operates over any wired or wireless access including fibre, HFC, microwave, copper, LTE or Wi-Fi.

Unlike previous WAN migrations, an SD-WAN deployment does not require a upgrade of your existing WAN infrastructure.

SD-WAN allows you to connect any user with any authorised application, regardless of where that user is located or how they are accessing the network.

Depending on the WAN connections available at each site, you can establish policies that will determine which network link each application will use based on pre-defined latency, jitter and packet loss parameters that are monitored in real-time.

With SD-WAN, there’s a new way to deploy wide area networking that: – simplifies the overall network – reduces the number and complexity of the devices you install at the branch – gives you the freedom to choose who provides the bandwidth to branches on a location-by-location basis.

BUSINESS BENEFITS GALORE

SD-WAN is a fresh approach to the construct, MANAGEMENT AND OPTIMISATION OF A WAN.

It makes so many things possible that companies worldwide are still finding out which benefit is the most important for their own business. Here are just a few examples:

WHICH SD-WAN SOLUTION IS RIGHT FOR MY ORGANISATION?

Too many new voices and competing claims can make the decision a bit confusing. So here are four things to consider when evaluating suppliers:

CHOOSE A WELL-ESTABLISHED PLAYER Until the market matures, it is wiser to go for an established vendor that already supplies a number of Tier 1 telco customers.
OPEN STANDARDS FOR AN OPEN FUTURE For example: MEFnet vendor interoperability ensures a great choice of proven compatible equipment. And ask how many partner vendors access your chosen supplier's API: the more there are, the more options you will have for fully tailored solution.
MAKE SURE THAT THE SUPPLIER OFFERS A GENUINE END-TO-END SOLUTION FROM THE BRANCH TO THE HEART OF THE DATA CENTRE Less established companies are still cobbling together links and APIs to achieve this connectivity.
ASK IF THEY ARE OFFERING A TRUE MULTI-TENANT SOLUTION SUPPORTING BOTH L2 AND L3 VPN CONNECTIVITY. This will impress them with your astute technical know-how.If the answer is 'yes' it will also save you a lot of frustration later on.
